Did you know that mountain bikes first started out as a tool?
Before mountain biking became the thrilling sport we know today, bikes built for rough terrain were originally designed as practical tools. One of the earliest documented examples dates back to the 1890s, when the U.S. Army’s Buffalo Soldiers used bicycles to travel from Montana to Yellowstone across rugged, unforgiving landscapes.
These early bicycles were a far cry from modern mountain bikes. They lacked suspension, had limited gearing, inefficient brakes, and were far heavier than the lightweight MTB frames we ride today. Despite their limitations, they proved reliable enough for long journeys across tough terrain—paving the way for the evolution of mountain biking as a sport.
